The implications of the Dolan research for how wealth managers should actually advise clients. Where the industry currently gets it wrong, and what changes when you accept that the interesting question isn’t “how do I make more?” but “is what I have organised in a way that fits the life I actually want?”
Now for those that don't know you please introduce yourself. Yes, I'm Eliana Sides, I head the client team in our operations and all the delivery services for our clients here at Whitetree. Now Eliana there's a lot being said about the autumn UK autumn budget. Yes. Describe the autumn budget in one word. Can I have more than one word? Difficult. More challenging in reality than it appeared on the surface. Inheritance tax and pension changes always have families worried. Yes. How are you helping them think differently about intergenerational conversations right now? We always talk to our clients about intergenerational because at the end of the day nobody actually wants to be buried with their wealth. They always want to pass it on whether it's to charities or to their family or a mix of both. So in reality we don't change anything that we do normally but there are some different nuances that will come out of the budget. Just questions on do you use your pension as your tool for the future or do you decide to maybe give the money away quicker to your younger family members and particularly as there seems to be quite a profound hit on certain age groups and wealth areas in this budget I think the Bank of Mum Dad may come in earlier and in slightly different ways as a result. People can also feel paralyzed by these big changes. Yeah. Talk to me about why tiny regular steps and keeping that proper long term satellite view actually matters more than ever. Well, actually, we see this a lot where people think they have to do just one big thing. And in reality, the one big thing is probably the most dangerous thing you can do because who knows what the next budget's going to say. What you actually want to do is lots of small things. That old don't put all your eggs in one basket, it's really true. If you can think about a lot of small micro changes, they add up, they compound into something really powerful. So you shouldn't base everything on say, talked about intergenerational, oh I'm going to do everything into a trust and that will solve my whole inheritance tax issue. No it won't. It won't because you're probably not going to die on exactly the date that that planning was done for and actually for a great number of people it's the people who are receiving the money that you need to understand their situations so when budget changes come along it isn't about just your position it's about your whole family's position and how that money moves between generations and this is where we spend our time talking to our families not just to one person but to both spouses, to their children, to ensure that we're actually building a plan that works for everyone. Tailored, personalised, much so and lots of small changes. So finally one thing you want viewers to remember after this video what would that be? Financial planning requires some time and effort both from your advisor and from yourselves. It isn't a once and done there is no such thing every year the budget comes along every year there are changes some expected some not every year your life changes and if you're not thinking about those two that often crash together sometimes work, in harmony not that often but sometimes then all you end up doing is leaving things to drift too far away and the longer you leave it to drift the harder it is to rectify. Our lives are a bit like an oil tanker you can't change an oil tanker's direction in a second it takes lots of small movements to get it facing the right way so what I want you to remember is come and talk to us and we can help you understand what it is you need to do. If I had to think of something important that might stick in your head every action you do is about paying your future self and I want your future self to party.
